Featured Travel Writer Tuesday with Tammy from Midlife Milestones
We are so excited to have this week’s Featured Travel writer! Witte’s World has been following this blog since they first started blogging and watching them grow professionally and personally, has been a joy!
My name is Tammy and I write about travel at Midlife Milestones. I am a mother of two wonderful young men and have been married for 28 years to my hubby. I have always loved to write and when I started to really travel I felt the urge to share how I did it and help others discover the freedom of travel. See my husband is not much of a traveler and well I have a wandering soul. I started dreaming of Ireland and it was nearly two year before I finally went. My mom was a big supporter of me going and after she passed I had to complete the dream in honor of her. With that trip, I had discovered a freedom that I had never known and can’t believe I had missed out on my whole life. I needed to share with others how they too could travel and do it within their budgets. With that Midlife Milestones was born.
1. How long have you been a travel blogger?
Less than one year.
2. Are you a full-time travel blogger or do you also have another job/career?
I work full time as a retail bakery manager.
3. What got you started into travel blogging?
As I mentioned in my intro writing has always been a large part of me.
4. Where was the most exciting place you have traveled to write a blog post?
I would have to say Ireland and no I wasn’t even blogging then. Ireland is just so beautiful and there is no much to write about. Plus being my first trip out of the US it will always have a special place in my heart.
5. Were you hired to write the post?
No, this was a blog post that I wrote completely on my own free will. This was before I knew how to pitch to travel locations for comped accommodations.
6. If you have traveled to write a sponsored travel blog post, tell us how you came upon the contract…did you pitch it to them? did they contact you? Share as much about your experience as you can.
My husband and I were traveling to North Carolina for a family reunion. I was very new to blogging and saw an opportunity to try reaching out with my blog. I wanted to see the Tryon Palace and so I contacted the head of their marketing department with an email and asked for free tickets in exchange for my post and sharing across all my social media platforms. They were more than happy to work with me.
5. What is working well for you and your travel blog? Why?
I have limited myself to one post a week for the travel blog. I do not want to just write for the sake of writing. I felt limiting myself allows me to focus and offer better content.
7. What is not working out well for your travel blog? Why?
Getting organic readers is proving to be difficult. I am not sure why as I share my content. I have been told blogging is a marathon, not a sprint. It will get better!
8. What tools, programs, apps do you use to create your travel blog/website that you would recommend to all travel bloggers. You are allowed to add a link to your favorite programs, plugins, tools, or apps.
I absolutely love Canva for all my graphics. It is a free program with options to purchase items. I also love mailerlite for my email list. I find it easy to use and again it’s free. Lastly, I prefer not to use stock photos but sometimes I just do not have any pictures that will fit the topic. Unsplash is an awesome free stock photo site.
9. What piece of advice would you give to someone who is interested in starting a travel blog?
Do your research first, figure out what you really want to write about and narrow your niche. Also, maybe start with a free blog until you have some content and have your niche narrowed. That will save you a lot of time and money in the end.
10. What do you have planned for the future of your travel blog?
Long term I want to tie my travel agency into my blog. I really want to offer my readers downloadable walking tours and itineraries for different locations.
